Pietro Ricchi ("Il Lucchese"), Lot and His Daughters

17th century
Ca' Rezzonico, Venice, Italy

This story is told in Genesis 19:30-37. After fleeing the destruction of Sodom, Lot lived with his two daughters in a cave in the hills above Zoar. The men of Sodom being now dead, the daughters feared they would never be able to have children, so they got their father drunk and had relations with him. Their offspring became the Moabites and the Ammonites.

The scene in the painting is set in the cave. One daughter refills Lot's cup while the other entices him. More wine vessels are on hand in the lower left corner. The lighting of the scene enhances the moral content: the father is in shadow, his eyes darkened, while the daughter's attractions are brightly lit.
